Zuckerberg being the savior of humanity wasn’t on my bingo card for 2026

On Wednesday Dario and Altman went to the UN asking for international AI standards. Altman says governments should stay in charge, but I don’t like where this could go. Control of AI given to a small group of experts? That sounds like a pitch for an unelected world government. Talk about a deal with the devil.

And on the same day Zuck announced his vision of AI that empowers you to create and achieve your goals. With Meta, the deal is that they get to sell you stuff. We long ago agreed to that deal with Facebook and Google, and no matter how uncomfortable that makes some people, I’d take it over giving control to a small, unelected body. That way is tyranny.

And it was exciting seeing his vision come to life. He talked about wanting to create AR glasses in my YC batch in Summer 2014. He’s already been building towards this vision for decades.

AI is obviously not just the software. It’s going to take us beyond the phone. We’re going to have a new computer platform. Zuck outlined his vision for what this looks like: computing that follows you around, in the background, supporting your day-to-day life. Will he win? I don’t know, but I’m excited he’s trying and that we have an alternative to Dario’s Effective Altruism tyranny.
