Google launched AI checkout at scale. Your store is in the system. You still won't appear.

Google launched AI checkout at scale. Your store is in the system. You still won’t appear. Here’s the part nobody is explaining.

Google IO made it official: Shopify’s commerce protocol is live inside Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Copilot Checkout. Five-and-a-half million stores, in by default.

Being in the system isn’t the same as being recommended. There are two separate problems, and almost nobody has both solved.

The first is product data. Less than 1% of product pages currently meet the structured data standard AI agents use to evaluate and compare products. Schema markup, GTINs, FAQPage blocks. Most brands never needed this and haven’t built it. And many don’t even have the underlying data.

The second is harder to see. 85% of AI brand recommendations come from third-party sources, not brand sites. Agents don’t trust what you say about yourself. They look at what others say about you. Brands with mentions across ten or more independent domains get cited at three times the rate of those without. Reddit threads, independent reviews, industry write-ups. None of that builds itself.

I’ve been working on both for two months with True Norma. The product data took weeks. The citation layer is slower. You can’t ship a fix, you accumulate one.

Which one are you further behind on?
