Don't wait too long to learn Claude Code
You’re probably sick of being told to learn AI tools. But this isn’t that post.
Thursday. Same model. Same prompt. My SEO workflow ate my entire token budget. Last week it used 40%.
Anthropic cut token limits per 5-hour session by roughly 50% this week. No announcement, no warning. In March you could get double usage outside peak hours. That’s gone too. The direction of travel is clear, and it isn’t toward cheaper.
I assumed VCs would subsidize the learning curve for at least two more years. The logic seemed solid: aggressive land-grab phase, token costs falling, competitive pressure keeping prices low. Turns out Anthropic had other plans.
The token cut is annoying. That’s not the actual problem.
Here’s the real issue. Using these tools is an art. Not in a vague, hand-wavy way. Specifically: knowing when a two-sentence prompt is enough and when imprecision costs you three retries. Which tasks run well in a single context window and which need to be split into stages. How to structure a workflow so it doesn’t eat the budget before it finishes. When to use one model over another. These aren’t things you read about and apply. They’re things you develop over hundreds of hours of real usage.
That intuition takes time. Right now, the cost of building it is still manageable. You can run experiments, iterate on workflows, and learn from failures without it being prohibitively expensive. But the direction of travel is clear: costs are rising, limits are tightening, and the window to learn affordably is narrowing.
To be fair: OpenAI will probably subsidize longer. They have a bigger free tier and have historically been less aggressive on usage limits. But Anthropic has the best models right now — Claude 3.7 Sonnet in particular is in a different class for complex reasoning and multi-step workflows. If you want the reps on the tools that matter most, you want them on Anthropic’s stack while the learning is still affordable.
The window is open. It’s just smaller than it was on Wednesday.
